Telic Engineering / Controls / Woodward MicroNet

Woodward MicroNet. We know what is in the GAP.

Unit tripped, outage coming up, or a NetCon that nobody wants to touch any more? We work on Woodward MicroNet, MicroNet Plus and MicroNet TMR, on LM2500, LM5000, LM6000 and TM2500 packages and on steam turbine and compressor trains, offshore and onshore. We read the GAP application and the datalogs before we touch anything, and we leave paperwork you can use.

Woodward MicroNet Plus: where we work on the system Front view of a Woodward MicroNet Plus 14-slot chassis: a power supply at each end (PS1 and PS2), redundant CPUs in the first and last slot (A1 and A14), twelve I/O modules in between and a fan on each of the three chassis blocks; cables from the I/O modules to field terminal modules, a speed pickup and a fuel valve, an engineering laptop with GAP and a link to the HMI and plant DCS, with six numbered points: GAP and datalogs, I/O and wiring, speed and actuator modules, CPU redundancy, power supplies, HMI and DCS. Sheet 01

Where we work on a MicroNet system

The six places where most of our work happens, numbered as in the drawing at the top of the page.

  1. 01GAP and the tools. When a unit trips you want it back, and you want to know why. The answer is usually in the datalog: we read the GAP application, trends and datalogs with AppManager, Control Assistant and SOS (Watch Window and Servlink on older sites) before anything gets swapped.
  2. 02I/O and field wiring. A reading you cannot trust costs more than a trip. Analog, discrete, thermocouple and RTD modules and LINKnet I/O, loop checked from the field device to the value in the application, with the scaling checked in GAP, not assumed.
  3. 03Speed and actuators. Speed signals and fuel valves decide whether the unit starts and holds load. Speed inputs and the actuator drivers for fuel valves, VSV and VBV: pickup gap, signal on crank, driver current and valve stroke, checked end to end.
  4. 04CPU redundancy. Redundancy only helps if the standby really takes over. MicroNet Plus runs a master and a standby CPU in the first and last slot (A1 and A14); MicroNet TMR votes two out of three. We prove the switchover, and that a module can be replaced without tripping the unit. More in our field note on redundant controls health.
  5. 05Power supplies. A failed supply on a redundant system trips nothing; it raises an alarm that is easy to miss. PS1 and PS2 sit at each end of the chassis, often on separate feeds. We check both supplies, both feeds, and that the alarm actually comes up.
  6. 06HMI and DCS links. Operators and the plant DCS need to see what the control sees. Modbus, EGD and OPC links checked at both ends, because a signal is only right when it reads the same in both places.

What we do

By engineers who have done it before. Every job comes with a short daily report and paperwork you can use.

Troubleshooting

Trips, failed starts, module faults, CPU switchovers. Datalogs first, then the wiring, then the parts, so the unit is back without guesswork.

Inspections

The controls and instrumentation scope of 4k, 8k, annual and L1 inspections on MicroNet units, done in the outage window, with calibration sheets and a service report before we leave.

NetCon and Atlas upgrades

Off the obsolete hardware without extending the outage: migrations from NetCon 5000 and Atlas to MicroNet and MicroNet Plus, commissioned on a running asset within the shutdown window.

Application changes

Logic and sequence changes, alarm and trip settings, HMI updates. Tested offline, downloaded at an agreed moment, and documented, so the next engineer knows what was changed.

Commissioning & start-up

New MicroNet systems on gas turbine, steam turbine and compressor packages: I/O checks, functional tests, first start and load tests.

Control health checks

A day on the running unit: redundancy, power supplies, module diagnostics, alarms and the application version against what is on file. Written up, so you know what to fix at the next outage.

Questions we get

Do you work for Woodward or for the operator?

Both. Woodward is one of the companies we are a registered supplier to, and much of our MicroNet work is for OEMs, packagers and service providers, as their field engineer. We also work directly for operators. Where a service contract is in place, we work alongside that team, not around it.

Can you change the GAP application?

Yes. Logic, sequence and alarm changes in GAP, tested offline before they go onto the running unit. Where the application belongs to the OEM or the packager, we work with their approval and keep to their version control.

MicroNet Plus or MicroNet TMR?

Both, and the simplex MicroNet, NetCon 5000 and Atlas systems before them. A redundant or TMR system needs different checks from a simplex one: a failure does not trip the unit, so it has to be found before the second one does.

Do you supply parts?

Hard-to-find and obsolete control and instrumentation parts for MicroNet-controlled packages, sourced through our supplier network, checked for compatibility, installed and tested on site.

How fast can you get an engineer to site?

Send the start date, location and scope and you get availability and an estimate the same working day. Offshore certificates (OPITO BOSIET/FOET, MIST, offshore medical) are kept current, so paperwork is not what holds you up.

Can you send more than one engineer?

Yes. For campaigns or several units at once we add contractors from our own network, under our agreement, our insurance and our reporting. How resource supply works.
