Telic Engineering / Engines / LM5000

LM5000 controls and instrumentation. Still running, still supported.

The LM5000 is out of production, but the units that run are expected to keep running, and engineers who know them are getting harder to find. Inspections, safety-critical instrumentation, start-up after an exchange, troubleshooting and GAP updates, offshore, on Woodward MicroNet.

Where we work on the LM5000

The six places on the LM5000 where most of our work happens, numbered as in the drawing at the top of the page.

  1. 01VBV. The variable bleed valves between the LP and HP compressor keep the LPC out of stall at low power. Actuators, position feedback and the schedule checked, also after an exchange.
  2. 02VSV system. After a gas generator exchange the VSVs are stroked end to end and the feedback is checked against the schedule, before the first start.
  3. 03Thermocouples. Probes, harness and readings at ambient and on load. A bad thermocouple is cheap; a trip on a false reading is not.
  4. 04Speed and overspeed. LP, HP and power turbine speed pickups set and checked on crank, and the overspeed trip tested for real.
  5. 05Fuel metering valve. Valve exchange, set-up and the start-up support after it. We have done this offshore more than once.
  6. 06Control system. Woodward MicroNet and MicroNet Plus. GAP and HMI updates, datalogging and sequence changes.

What we do on the LM5000

By engineers who have done it before. Every job comes with a short daily report and paperwork you can use.

4k and 8k inspections

The controls and instrumentation scope of 4k and 8k inspections. Calibration sheets and a service report before we leave the installation.

Safety-critical instrumentation

Inspection and testing of the safety-critical instrumentation on the package, with the records your verification scheme asks for.

Start-up after an exchange

Gas generator exchange, engine exchange or turnaround: the checks before the first start, the start itself and the run-up to load.

Fuel metering valve

Valve replacement, set-up and start-up support, including dual-fuel units.

Troubleshooting

Trips and failed starts on an engine that has seen a lot of years. We read the datalogs first and find the cause.

GAP and HMI updates

Application changes on MicroNet and the HMI, tested offline before they go on the running unit.

Questions we get

Do you work for the OEM or for the operator?

Both. Much of our LM5000 work is for OEMs, packagers and service providers, as their field engineer. We also work directly for operators and owners. Where an OEM service contract is in place, we work alongside the OEM team, not around it.

Woodward or GE controls?

Both. We are experts on Woodward and GE control systems. The LM5000 packages we support run Woodward MicroNet and MicroNet Plus.

Do you work on the safety-critical elements?

Yes. Inspection and testing of safety-critical instrumentation on the LM5000 package is a regular part of our 4k and 8k scope offshore.

How fast can you get an engineer to site?

Send the start date, location and scope and you get availability and an estimate the same working day. Offshore certificates (OPITO BOSIET/FOET, MIST, offshore medical) are kept current, so paperwork is not what holds you up.

Can you send more than one engineer?

Yes. For campaigns or several units at once we add contractors from our own network, under our agreement, our insurance and our reporting. How resource supply works.

LM5000 inspection or exchange coming up?

Send the start date, estimated duration, scope, systems on site and location. You get availability and an estimate the same working day.
