On the unit

- 01What it does. A magnetic pickup sits a small gap away from a toothed wheel or gear. Every tooth that passes gives a pulse, so the control sees a frequency that follows rotor speed. Speed control and overspeed protection both live on that signal, so each shaft normally has several pickups: control channels plus separate channels for the overspeed system.
- 02Where it sits. On the LM2500 the gas generator speed (NGG) comes from the accessory gearbox and the power turbine speed (NPT) from pickups on the turbine rear frame. On the LM6000 we read N25 (HP rotor) on the gearbox and N2 (LP rotor) at the LP turbine. The package adds pickups and keyphasors on the gearbox, generator or compressor.
- 03What goes wrong. A signal that drops out at crank speed because the gap is too wide or the amplitude too low. Spikes from a damaged shield or a ground loop. A connector or cable that fails only when it is hot. Two channels that disagree, so the control trips on speed deviation instead of overspeed.
- 04How we check it on site. Coil resistance and insulation, gap set to the drawing, amplitude and frequency at crank and at speed, channel-to-channel comparison in the datalog, and the overspeed trip proven with a simulated speed signal into the control and the protection system.

Questions
Can you prove the overspeed trip without running the engine to overspeed?
Yes. We inject a simulated speed signal at the pickup input of the control and of the overspeed system and prove the trip, the voting and the trip valve or fuel shutoff response. On a running unit we then compare all channels against each other.
Which speed names do you use?
The names on the unit: NGG and NPT on the LM2500, N2 and N25 on the LM6000, plus whatever the package uses for the driven equipment.
