On the unit
We find the part, check it against the parts breakdown for your engine model, and install and test it on site if you want.
- 01What it does. The exciter stores energy and discharges it through the lead into the igniter plug in the combustor during the start. Most LM engines have two exciters and two igniters, so one channel can fail without losing the start.
- 02Where it sits. Igniters in the combustor case, exciters on the engine or the enclosure, connected by shielded high-voltage leads.
- 03What goes wrong. A worn or fouled plug, a lead that breaks down when hot, an exciter that no longer charges, a missing supply or command from the control, and an exciter that works but fires at the wrong moment in the sequence.
- 04How we check it on site. Exciter supply and command checked against the start sequence, lead insulation, the spark checked safely with the exciter isolated as the manual prescribes, and the light-off trended on the next start.

Questions
Is it safe to test an exciter on site?
Only with the output connected or isolated as the manual prescribes. The output is lethal. We follow the engine documentation and the site's permit system.
Failed start, where do you start?
With the start sequence data: purge, ignition command, fuel and flame. That shows whether the ignition, the fuel or the control is the problem.
